PerLab

The Pervasive Computing and Networking Laboratory

Lab Research

Pervasive computing is an emerging field and was highlighted by the European Commission as a target for Europe in 2020. Research in this field requires a joint cooperative environment with highly heterogeneous competences. This is the main reason for the PERLAB birth.

The goal of PERLAB research is to foster the creation of pervasive and mobile services to create ambient intelligence. These services are obtained using network devices embedded in the environment to provide unobtrusive connectivity thus improving human experience and quality of life without explicit awareness of the underlying communications and computing technologies. These services are the result of a joint effort of researchers with different expertise such as: wireless networking, embedded systems, middleware, software agents, security.

Technology has reached an high level of maturity in most of the components of pervasive systems (wireless communications and networking, mobile computing and handheld devices, embedded systems, wearable computers, sensors, RFID tags, smart spaces, middleware, software agents) but it is not yet integrated in the world around us. PERLAB research will focus on the creation of complete ambient intelligence services in offices, homes, cars, etc.
